As you can see, I have been doing some redecorating around here. It all started when I wondered if I was clever enough to make a few label buttons…

I couldn’t decide what colour to make my buttons but I knew I wanted them to match my header.

So I consulted a Complete HTML True Color Chart to find the code of the main colour of my header, that nice grey/green colour.

I wanted to make my buttons in several colours that coordinated with this green. As I can never decide what colours look good together, I got some help from the site Color Scheme Designer.

By inserting the code of my main colour into the wheel, a few suggested colour palettes were generated. I chose one of these palettes and noted the codes of all its colours. I'd now organised my button colours.

I then did some Googling and found some label button making instructions on the Sugar and Spice blog, which looked simple enough for me to follow. Once the buttons were made, I inserted them in my side-bar.

Then I changed my outer blog background to match the main colour of my header, putting the exact colour code into the advanced template option.

While I was visiting my blog's template, I did some fine tuning of my gadgets and fonts and accents... It all looked great and...

...maybe I should have stopped my blog redesigning right at this point, but unfortunately I didn’t. I got a bit carried away and decided to widen all the columns of my blog. This messed up the way my blog posts appeared, so I had to spend a loooong time adjusting all the photos and layout of my 450 posts. (It was at this point I began to wish I'd written a post instead of redesigning my blog.)

Hours later, I was about to congratulate myself on a job well done, and close my computer for the night, when I suddenly realised I'd missed a small detail. My header no longer fitted my blog. I needed to make a wider one to fit the wider columns.

Despite being thoroughly fed up by this time, I searched for the original photo which I’d used for the original header, but without success. It had disappeared without trace. So I went to Morguefile to choose a new free-to-use-how-I-like photo.

I found another picture of daisies and followed my own instructions to make a new header.

I inserted the header, and sat back ready to admire the new appearance of my blog when something else occurred to me. The new header isn’t the same shade of green as the old one. I had gone to a lot of trouble to match up the colours of my buttons to my header, and now that header was gone.

I wasted about half a second wondering if I should start all over again, before convincing myself I like the way the colours don’t quite match. Who needs perfection? Not me.

So next time you can't find anything to write about, you could redesign your blog instead. You could give your blog an ALMOST perfect new look... or even a perfect new look if you don't make the same mistakes as me!

  1. I like your new almost perfect lay out very much. That searching for the exact colour tones to match your header sounds familiar to me ... and you succeded in my wiew. But the broadening of the column was a not so good idea. If you do not have a gigantic screen - and I haven't - you've got to press [Ctrl -] many times to see the whole of it, and then the blog text is illegibly small. Rigth now I can read the text and see either half of the buttons or half of the pictures of you and your family - I go for the halved portraits :)
And, no tempted as I am, I'm not going to follow your example and re-designe my blog. Btw, I have a tiny program, called ColorPix. It always sits on my bar, and gives me a one clic acess to the colour code.

    1. Uglemor,

Oh no! I didn't consider anyone would have trouble viewing the whole of my blog at one time. I tested the design on all our computers, including our tablets and there is excess background every time. There's plenty of room around the three columns. I wonder if anyone else is using a smaller screen. I might have to go back to the design drawing board and start again!! I also might have to resurrect my old blog header (and maybe readjust all those posts!)

I just downloaded Color Pix. Thank you for the recommendation. That is a much better way of matching colours. I'll use it when I do my new blog design!

  2. Hi Sue,

The blog looks great! It fits well on my iPad but, like Uglemor, the columns are cropped on the laptop.

    I like the colours.

    God bless:-)

    1. Vicky,

Thank you for the feedback! It is rather inconvenient that not all computer screens are the same size. Yet one more thing I didn't consider when redesigning my blog. My blog design isn't quite so 'almost perfect' as I once thought!

  3. Yours looks super and your post made me laugh. Mines a mess but I got so frustrated last time I decided to just give up until such time as I have some peace and quiet and TIME! When the kids leave home is looking good ... hehe

    1. Lisa,

You must be viewing my blog on a similar sized screen to mine, if it looks super! Thank you for your encouragement.

Redesigning blogs IS frustrating! I got into such a mess and I couldn't just leave it because my blog was still online and visible to the world! I think you are rather sensible waiting until you have some peace and quiet. When your girls leave home? That is so funny... hehe!!

  4. Sue-

I love the new look. The colors look beautiful (if not perfectly perfect) together. When I want to change my blog look, I take a different approach. I call my husband over and say-- "Give me something new!" I am not as technologically inclined as he is and it all confuses me way too much. He can do it in minutes and make it all look great (with just a bit of "backseat" designing advice from me).

Hope you are doing well. I've been taking a bit of a blogging break and have fallen behind in my blog reading too. It's nice to take a few minutes a catch up.

    Blessings, Kari

    1. Kari,

I've been thinking about you. I'd noticed your absence from the blogosphere! I hope you are having a relaxing summer, enjoying spending time with your children. It IS nice to catch up with you!

Your husband sounds wonderful. And very helpful. I know your blog got a new look fairly recently. Your header with all the photos looks great!

  5. Oh, there's no "almost" about it. It looks quite perfect to me. As in: gorgeous!

I can see it, including light green sides, on both computers I've tried. Glad for the heads-up about this, so I won't try widening my blogs any more than I already have! And to go back and change all the posts...... oh my!!!!

No problem. One day all computer screens will be the size of yours. Except for the flood of brand new ones just coming out then, of course....

    1. Nancy,

I'm glad my blog looks gorgeous! And you can see it all too, which is a bonus.

I think if photos are centred in a post, changing the width of a blog shouldn't be an issue. But I had lots of photos that looked centred but were actually positioned to one side. When I changed the column width, all the post text headed up the side of the photos. This didn't look very good and wasn't easy to read. It took a lot of work to sort it all out. Yes, I definitely think you should stick to the blog widths you already have. They are perfect!

"Except for the flood of brand new ones just coming out then, of course...." I didn't think of that but you are so right. Just as we get caught up with technology everything changes again!

    1. Anabelle,

We must all have those times when it's hard to think of anything to write about. My new blog look is meant to fool everyone into believing something is still going on here. My blog isn't really on its way out. Well, I hope it's not!

  7. It's always so fiddly redoing the blog layout, isn't it. I ended up buying a template off Etsy, but even then there was a world of tweaking to be done after it'd been installed.

    1. Kellie,

I usually love fiddling about with my blog, until I get too ambitious and then I wish I'd never started! I've never considered buying a template. I must take a look at what's available. I guess we all want something attractive and fairly unique, to make us stand out from the crowd of other bloggers. There really must be a market for new blog designs. If I was creative enough I could make some of my own to sell but no chance of that. I can't even seem to get my own blog right!

    1. Beate,

Thank you! What a great idea, linking a tab to my unschooling blog. Now I just need to work out how to do that. I shall have to think about that. Also, I want to make a linked button for my unschooling blog. I need to decide on an image. The header one is the wrong shape. I will do some more experimenting!

    1. Lisa,

Thank you! I don't know how to blog from a phone. I have one of those 'dumb' phones, not the smart variety. Useless for blogging. When it comes down to it, content is much more important than glamour, though redesigning blogs is a lot of fun!

    1. Valerie,

Dating a header is one way of making sure you update it regularly! I am guessing you will miss that beautiful picture of Mary Catherine when you do get around to making a new header. But I bet you have lots of equally gorgeous, more recent photos you can use. I like the pink and white tones of the photos you put together in the collage.

Blog buttons are easy to make! I don't know why I didn't make some sooner.

All's well here, thank you. I bet you are looking forward to the start of the school year and your new job!

You're back! It's always great to go away, but even better to arrive back home!

I haven't written many new posts here while you've been away, but there are a few on my other blog. I seem to be thinking about parenting and homeschooling at the moment.

I'm glad you're back online. Missed you! Can't wait to see the photos, all 827 of them!!
